Global Development Initiative and Global Security Initiative: China’s New Approach to Global Governance
Post-the Belt and Road Initiative, which was a flagship Chinese program launched by President Xi Jinping that amalgamated Chinese geoeconomic and geostrategic initiatives, we have seen two new initiatives being announced in the last two years. In this podcast, Amb Ashok Kantha delves into the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative discussing Chinese intentions and implications for global governance.
‘Tagging’ the Major Powers: US National Security Strategy
The new National Security Strategy of the United States, the first of Biden's administration, outlined the government's intentions for dealing with China, Russia, and its consideration of India, as well as its perceptions towards these countries. It mentioned Russia as an aggressor, China as “America’s most consequential geopolitical challenge” and India as the “world’s largest democracy and a major defence partner of the US”.
India-ASEAN Relations: Growing Convergence
The momentous convergence of strategic interests in India-ASEAN relations over the years has enormously propelled robust cooperation between the two sides on multidimensional issues of mutual interests. The implications of consolidation of India-ASEAN partnership are remarkably perceived towards emboldening the spirit of shared progress and inclusiveness in an era of reformed multilateralism and transparency in global governance, while addressing emerging geostrategic challenges in the volatile Indo-Pacific and beyond.
India-Africa Counter-Terrorism Cooperation

Sister Nivedita and India’s Freedom Struggle
As we recently completed 75 years of Indian independence and will also observe the 155th birth anniversary of Sister Nivedita (1867-1911) on 28 October, it is time to uncover a not-so-well-known part of the history of our freedom struggle—Sister Nivedita’s involvement in the revolutionary movement in Bengal in the early twentieth century. Her contribution to India’s freedom struggle has received scant attention from historians; some historians even deny that she had any significant role to play.
COP 27 and Africa
In November 2022, COP27 will take place in Egypt. In this podcast episode, Samir Bhattacharya, Research Associate at Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) discusses with Olivia Rumble and Andrew Gilder some questions related to COP27 were discussed along with Africa's stake in the current negotiation. They also explored how India and Africa can work together under the South-South framework. Olivia Rumble and Andrew Gilder both work at Director level in Climate Legal, an environment and climate change legal advisory consultancy based in South Africa.
Political Control on Use of Combat Power
Russia-Ukraine War 2022 is emphasizing on a time-worn question: what is the balance between political control and military operational expertise in deciding military strategy? Consequent to the attack on Kerch Bridge, Russia struck with high-precision long-range air and sea-based weapons and “kamikaze” drones at military command facilities and Ukraine's energy and water supply system. Drones flying low over buildings in Kyiv city, announced their arrival with a hum adding tremors of terror. This became the true newer face of this war.
