Next Step in Disengagement in Eastern Ladakh and Contemplating Larger Implications
On 8th September 2022, 50 days after the 16th Round of China-India Corps Commander Level Meeting at Chushul-Moldo in Eastern Ladakh, consensus was reached on disengagement of the Chinese and Indian troops in the area of Jianan La (Daban) also designated at PP15. Apparently, PP15 at the highest point, the Pass on the ridge line, approached along the upper reaches of Kurang Nalla, had been a sticking point, as the Chinese have constructed a road from Depsang Bulge to Jianan La. Patrolling by the Indian army patrols to the Pass was unacceptable to the PLA.

On 7 September 2022, the US notified the US Congress that it had made a “determination” approving a possible “Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Government of Pakistan of F-16 for sustainment and related equipment for an estimated cost of $450 million.” The decision has been taken at the request of the Pakistani government. The scope of the work, interalia, includes[1]: F-16 aircraft structural integrity, electronic combat,
Remembering Gorbachev
“The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.” (William Shakespeare) Mikhail Gorbachev’s passing away on 30th August has compelled observers around the world to assess his place in history. For three decades, he has cut a tragic figure, ignored and vilified, mocked and sneered at by his own people and country. The reality is far more complex, and can be appreciated only if one has an understanding of the state of the Soviet Union when Gorbachev assumed power in March 1985.

Deterrence in Asymmetries
Ashley Tellis’s book – ‘Striking Asymmetries- Nuclear Transitions in South Asia’ has caught some media attention with commentators calling for a review of India’s nuclear doctrine and posture in view of an assessed build up of nuclear arsenals by both China and Pakistan. The report argues that India has shown remarkable self restraint despite Pakistan steadily building up warheads that exceed India’s numbers as on date. Similarly, China is expected to ramp up its nuclear arsenal sharply to deter the US as it emerges as a strategic competitor to the superpower.
The Precondition to ‘Tolerate’: Remembering Swami Vivekananda’s Wisdom on September 11
The usage of the word ‘tolerance’ could be traced back to 15th century when it denoted ‘the power or capacity of sustaining’. It evolved to receive a more political meaning in the 16th century to mean ‘action of allowing; license, permission granted by authority’ (for instance, Queen Elizabeth I might allow the Puritans to carry on with their religious practices, which she herself did not follow).[1] Thereafter, the word tolerance acquired a wider status in the English lexicon.
