How About Some Commonsense in Dealing with Corruption?
I joined the Indian Administrative Service more than fifty-four years ago in 1957. Government was much less complex then, but we were already into an era of planned development and increasingly the regulatory regime of the British was giving way to a more development oriented but state driven government and economy. It was a transition from empire to republic and we of the IAS were a fairly important part of this transition.

The Turmoil Within - Pakistan’s future is causing concern all over the world
Pakistan’s future is raising concerns internationally. Can this nuclear-armed country step back from the brink by radically changing its internal and external outlook? Pakistan cannot break its Islamic links as it came into being because of Islam. But must it discard the relatively softer face of Islam that connects it to its Indian subcontinental roots and embrace more extremist Islamist ideologies?
Don’t Write off Putin Just Yet
Western criticism of the results of the December 4 parliamentary elections in Russia is not surprising. The West’s fued with Russia’s democracy goes back to Putin’s ascendancy to power in 2000. It is Russia’s veering away under him from global standards of democracy set up by the West that has spawned acrimony between it and the US all these years.
India Should Strengthen Its Maritime Security Architecrure
India, as a nation, seems to have gained notoriety for not learning from the past mistakes. Equally glaring is India’s consistent failure to respond to the emerging situations with the speed and seriousness it deserves. And no wonder that the history keeps repeating itself with stunning regularity. Indeed, it took 26/11 for the Indian government to be jolted out of its ‘smugness and slumber’ to announce an ambitious plan to strengthen the coastal security architecture through a slew of measures.
The Law is Not An Ass – Only People Are
There is a monumentally asinine serial called “The Bold and the Beautiful” which has been shown on the television for several years now. Each time an episode ends one feels that we shall now be spared any further infliction. The next episode begins, every time with a twist to the theme from the point where it left off. Each episode is as unbelievable as the one it succeeds and one cannot help but feeling that one is watching the theatre of the absurd compared to which the Mad Hatter’s tea party seems to be a model of sanity.
CRUNCHTIME PAKISTAN
The already strained US-Pakistan relations appear to have gone into almost a freefall after NATO gunships fired on two Pakistan army posts along the Pak-Afghan border in the Mohmand Tribal agency killing 24 soldiers and injuring around a dozen more, ironically enough three years to the day of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.
