Flawed Communal Bill, 2011
Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) Bill, 2011 is an affront to the Indian civilization and tradition which since thousands of years believed in peaceful co- existence and respected the pluralistic values of life. The Hindu civilization demonstrated a spirit of harmony rather than conflict; of synthesis and tolerance rather than opposition. This ideal of harmony and tolerance of the Hindus has been carried on for thousands of years and even now the Hindus maintain impeccable faith in it.
PM’s Bangladesh Visit: Not A Game Changer
Prime Minister’s visit to Bangladesh from September 6th to 7th was a once in a life time opportunity to place India-Bangladesh ties on an irreversibly upward trajectory. The imperative for seizing this opportunity at the earliest arises from the fact that the term of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, which shares this sentiment, runs out in only a little more than two years and Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh National Party which may well replace it has historically not been well disposed towards India.
India’s Tryst with Terror
How should we interpret the latest terrorist attack in India? Because it occurred when the Indian prime minister was in Bangladesh charting a new relationship with that country (which, until Sheikh Hasina came to power, had provided a safe haven for terrorists targeting India), the attack could be construed as a reminder that covering our flank does not lessen India’s vulnerability.
Interpreting The Maladies
The Arab Spring pollinated the rejuvenating purpose of the Anna Hazare campaign, even though the context of the street movements in the two cases is different. The movements in Tunisia and in Egypt that caused the downfall of entrenched dictators vividly demonstrated internationally that massive and sustained peaceful street mobilization through the social media can be a powerful instrument for political change in countries amenable to Western influence.
Lokpal, Jan Lokpal Or Obstructionpal?
As a Visiting Fellow of Vivekanand International Foundation I had promised myself that in writing any papers for the Foundation the use of the first person singular would be avoided. So far that has happened, but perhaps the time has come to make one exception, which is why in this paper the letter ‘I’ will appear. My apologies to the readers in advance.
Pentagon Report Outlines Fast Track PLA Modernisation
The Annual Report of the Department of Defence colloquially known as Pentagon’s Report on China’s Military Power has been released. The Report is mandated by the US Congress and provides a bird’s eye view each year of developments in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). An overview read in conjunction with the China’s White Paper on Defence 2010 highlights a significant trend, fast track modernization of the PLA.
Nepal gets its 4th Prime Minister in 3 years
Following the resignation of NCP-UML Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal the Constituent Assembly (CA) met in Kathmandu on October 28, 2011 and elected Maoist leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai as the 4th Prime Minister since 2008 when the country was declared a Republic. Dr. Bhattarai and MPRF (D) leader Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar were administered the oath of office as Prime Minister and Deputy PM respectively by the President on Aug. 29, 2011. Dr. Bhattarai is the second Maoist leader after Prachanda to assume this responsibility.
