Hu’s Successor is Xi
Appointment of Vice President Xi Jinping to the post of Vice Chairman of Central Military Commission (CMC) in the recently concluded Fifth Plenum of the 17th Congress of CPC further indicates that the stage is ready for Mr. Xi to take up the cudgel from President Hu Jintao by 2012. Given the unstable and unprecedented conditions confronting China today, the highest political management of the country certainly would prefer choosing a consensus candidate as the next president and not indulge in power contests within the party for political succession.
Nobel Peace Prize when Awarded to a Prisoner of State
Before the Tiananmen Student Movement of 1989, Deng Xiaoping, architect of China’s reform and opening to the wider world, repeatedly urged his countrymen to maintain a stable political environment. He emphasized that China would not tolerate disturbances; he even said explicitly that the Chinese leadership would shed some blood if that became necessary in the larger interests of the country.
Deconstructing Musharraf’s Confessions
There is something quite pathetic about the sensational confessions of a loquacious former military dictator harbouring fond, if utterly unrealistic, hopes of making a comeback in his country’s politics. Although Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s interview with Der Spiegel was full of self-serving half-truths, it nevertheless revealed the inherent shallowness of a military strongman. Peeling away his pretentions of being a statesman, the interview showed him up as a purveyor of kitsch politics. What is more, the interview reaffirmed Pakistan’s image as a rogue state.
Military and Militants Join Hands to Target Nato Convoys?
It has been a double whammy for the American war effort in the Afpak region: not only have the Americans been made to eat humble pie and ‘apologise’ to the Pakistanis for the helicopter attack on a Frontier Corps (FC) border post in Kurram agency, they have also had to suffer an ill-disguised blockade by the Pakistan army of NATO logistic supply lines that run through Pakistan.
Manipur: The State under seize and the way forward - A study of contemporary setting and policy options
Manipur—which literally translates into the “bejewelled land” — is the most disturbed state in the North East, accounting for 47 per cent of the insurgency related violence in the region. Perched in an isolated corner of the country, the state is caught in a cycle of insurgency, ethnic strife and inter-state dissonance. Additionally, the state’s economy has witnessed serious decay in recent years—not in the least because of economic blockades that are regularly engineered by Naga groups as well as the parallel economy that is being run by the insurgents.
