Deconstructing Musharraf’s Confessions
There is something quite pathetic about the sensational confessions of a loquacious former military dictator harbouring fond, if utterly unrealistic, hopes of making a comeback in his country’s politics. Although Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s interview with Der Spiegel was full of self-serving half-truths, it nevertheless revealed the inherent shallowness of a military strongman. Peeling away his pretentions of being a statesman, the interview showed him up as a purveyor of kitsch politics. What is more, the interview reaffirmed Pakistan’s image as a rogue state.
Military and Militants Join Hands to Target Nato Convoys?
It has been a double whammy for the American war effort in the Afpak region: not only have the Americans been made to eat humble pie and ‘apologise’ to the Pakistanis for the helicopter attack on a Frontier Corps (FC) border post in Kurram agency, they have also had to suffer an ill-disguised blockade by the Pakistan army of NATO logistic supply lines that run through Pakistan.
Manipur: The State under seize and the way forward - A study of contemporary setting and policy options
Manipur—which literally translates into the “bejewelled land” — is the most disturbed state in the North East, accounting for 47 per cent of the insurgency related violence in the region. Perched in an isolated corner of the country, the state is caught in a cycle of insurgency, ethnic strife and inter-state dissonance. Additionally, the state’s economy has witnessed serious decay in recent years—not in the least because of economic blockades that are regularly engineered by Naga groups as well as the parallel economy that is being run by the insurgents.
Getting ‘Stoned’ by the Stones
Since June, the stone-pelting in Kashmir seems to have left the Indian establishment stupefied. The government, both in the state and at the centre, has been reduced to a state of paralysis, almost as though they have been ‘stoned’ by the stones. To add to the confoundedness of the government, parachute journalists, with little sense of history and even less sense of reality, have been indulging in needless breast-beating about the situation in Kashmir and making recommendations, not to mention analyses, which are not just downright stupid but also dangerous, if not treasonous.
Six Reasons why India is not scared of China’s Military Showdown in South Tibet (Arunachal Pradesh)
India is completely ignoring Chinese indignations and warnings despite the fact that the latter sternly cautioned the former regarding Prime Minister Monmohan Singh’s planned visit covering several parts of China’s South Tibetan region scheduled to be commenced in the near future. In recent years the Indian government has adopted an offensive policy on the Sino-Indian border issue. India is far more adventurist in dealing with China and is intentionally creating disturbances. India has also been taking a very hard and uncompromising position.
How do Ordinary People look at Politics in China?
Liang Heng, a renouned journalist of the People’s Daily has recently discussed common man’s notion about politics in the people’s forum of the daily. The author writes on politics and knows the difficulties of publishing political articles in an authoritarian state structure governed by a Leninist party. In 2006, Liang wrote an article on how “three difficulties” and “two specially” influence the writings of political stories (possibly the journalists of socialist countries are not allowed to write stories, they are supposed to report truth emanated from the supreme party leadership).
OPEN SEASON ON PAKISTANI SHIAS
From Gilgit to Karachi and from Lahore to Quetta, extremist Sunni terrorist groups appear to have declared an open season on the minority Shia community in Pakistan. Despite the expressions of outrage and condemnation by top political leaders and civil society organizations against the wanton targeting of the Shias, the fact of the matter is that the complicity of the state agencies (partly by design and partly by default) in the mass murder of Shias is too glaring to ignore.
