Kashmir–Deciphering Islamabad’s Signals
The message from Islamabad is gaining in decibel: the Generals want New Delhi to initiate talks with them on Kashmir. The latest in a string of couriers was former Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, who urged Dr Manmohan Singh to travel to Islamabad for talks on Kashmir. Kasuri also suggested that a deal could be struck along the lines of the proposal floated some years ago by former dictator General Pervez Musharraf.
President Mededev's Visit
President Medvedev’s recent visit to India (December 21-22) has contributed to retrieving some of the ground being lost in India-Russia ties. A perception has been growing that the relevance of Russia to India has declined in the context of the changed international situation, India’s growth needs and Russian priorities, not to mention its diminshed capacities following the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequent financial blows in 1998, and in 2008 when the global economic crisis struck Russia severely, breaking the momentum of its resurgence.
J&K: Need For a Bipartisan Consensus
The full might of the Indian Republic was on display on this 26th January. No, not just in the Republic Day Parade but even more prominently at Lal Chowk in Srinagar! The BJPs plan to hoist the Tricolour in Srinagar was torpedoed by the central and State government in an awe inspiring display of the state’s might. A complete special train load of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) workers from Karnataka were about turned even as they slept. Others, who tried to enter the state from Punjab, in their thousands, were intercepted and imprisoned.
Internal Security – Need for Course Correction
India is on a surge; a great destiny awaits it. If there is one single factor that could negate or retard it, it will be its failure to govern itself. Ensuring safety and security of its people, upholding the rule of law, managing change with order and ensuring legitimacy of power by those who wield it shall be critical components of that governance. Should it fail to happen, history will once again lament India couldn’t do what it could.
Pakistan is no friend of pashtuns
For a country that never tires championing the cause of Afghan Pashtuns and eulogising the valour and traditions of Pakistani Pashtuns, the warped strategic vision of the national security state structure of Pakistan has inflicted the greatest damage to the identity, society, culture, traditions and most of all, posterity, of the Pashtuns. On the pretext of fighting for their interests, the Punjabi dominated Pakistani establishment has systematically reduced a once proud Pashtun community into pawns on the strategic chess-board.
Deergayu India-Indonesia Relations
An unsuspecting visitor to Indonesia in the month of August could be forgiven when greeted with huge banners all across with bold letters Deergayu Republik Indonesia for easily mistaking them as one of the state-led campaigns, but for an Indian it is stark reminder of age-old links between India and Indonesia. Even the Indian government does not use such a chaste Sanskrit word: Deergayu, meaning ‘long live’ to commemorate its independence.
China Factor in North East Insurgency – Alarming Signals
Nations accustomed to episodic response to high profile security events run the high risk of missing out subterranean trends and realities that could have unaffordable consequences. Small print news of a Chinese spy woman Wang Qing, masquerading as a TV reporter, visiting Headquarters of Naga rebel group NSCN(IM) in Hebron, 30 kms. from Dimapur, being quietly arrested and deported attracted little attention in the country .
