India and France Join Hands to Deliver ‘Public Goods at Sea’
Among the many facets of India-France bilateral relations, cooperation in the maritime domain has been high on the agenda. Maritime security with strong constabulary elements, exchange of information on White Shipping, Varuna series of naval exercises that have been creatively conceptualized and expanded, regular port calls by naval ships and training activities, and high level naval exchanges have figured prominently in the matrix of bilateral cooperation.
CDS Appointment: An Opportunity to Streamline Defence Acquisitions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day announcement from the ramparts of Red Fort to create Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) constitutes a major milestone in the history of India’s defence reforms1. The appointment of CDS was one of the key recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee (KRC) and the Group of Ministers Report (GoM) along with a host of other measures to introduce structural reforms in the Indian defence2.
Is it Time for India to Up its Game in West Asia?
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and France this week to boost bilateral ties with these states. The visit comes in the wake of support that India has received from these countries after New Delhi decided to scrap Article 370 from its constitution, which gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Modi government has worked hard to build close ties with the Gulf monarchies as well as France in recent years.
Misleading Reportage: India Remains a Miracle and Robust Democracy

But it’s Time to Downgrade its Credentials.” I wrote the reply below with the idea of giving friends and relatives living abroad a more balanced and less alarmist perspective on what’s happening in India. The reply is appended in the following part.
