The Top Four Ministers Need to Work in Harmony to Help Build New India
One striking feature of Modi Sarkar’s new cabinet is that the top four jobs of Home, Finance, Defence and External Affairs, are now occupied by new incumbents. They will bring their own visions and styles of functioning to their portfolios. Enjoying the trust of the Prime Minister, they, as members of the Cabinet Committee on Security, would need to work as a team to fulfil Prime Minister’s vision for New India.
Mrs. May's Resignation and European Parliament Elections
Mrs. May’s resignation on 24th May coincided with the European Parliament elections. The resignation was directly linked to Britain’s European Union (EU) policy, and her failure to get approval of British Parliament for the Brexit deal she had negotiated. The timing was awkward, but could not be avoided as Brexit deal kept slipping while the European Parliament elections, already scheduled, could not be postponed. However, British hesitation in leaving without a deal points to the strength of EU. Membership of the Union impinges on every facet of national life. As Mrs.
Modi’s Second Term: Implementing the ‘Neighbourhood First’
Along with others, the neighbourhood attention was riveted on the Indian general elections. For many, not only the scale of the exercise was fascinating but more importantly, what it portends for the future of their bilateral with India. And as the congratulatory messages flowed in from the neighbours on the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) overwhelming win, it reflected the interest and optimism that they held for engaging with India.
Vietnam Continues to be Wary of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)
The second BRI Forum of China held in April 2019 has received as much attention, if not more, as the first one held in May 2017. The fundamental objectives of the BRI remain the same, i.e., shoring up of domestic economy by exporting surplus industrial capacity, capital and even labour overseas for projects mainly sponsored by China. In the bargain, China not only makes commercial profits it also bolsters its geopolitical position as well as achieving what is termed as ‘China Dream’ as articulated by President Xi.
What should be India’s Pakistan Policy in PM Modi’s Second Term?
William Shakespeare had said, “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”. Amidst jubilations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be sworn to bear his onerous responsibility for another five years. Since he has returned with full majority, a feat repeated after a gap of 48 years, India and the world looks up to him for decisive leadership. The first 100 days would be critical when the tentative tracks of his policies will be drawn. India’s Pakistan policy will be one such course that would have to be laid with great caution.
