EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment
The EU and China announced a Comprehensive Agreement on Investment on 30th December. The announcement comes less than a month before the inauguration of the Biden Presidency. The development shows a rift opening up between EU and US positions even before the contours of the new Administration’s China policy have become clear. The agreement negotiated by the European Commission will have to be approved by the European Parliament and the EU Council. This process will take some time.
A Review of Atmanirbharta Policies
The year 2020 can be described as an extraordinary year. COVID-19 wreaked havoc in all policy arenas, severely affecting public, economic, international relations. The Government of India meanwhile, has taken significant steps to promote the ‘Atmanirbharta’ initiative. As the ‘Unlock’ procedures have come into effect after the unprecedented national lockdown, the Centre came up with policies which will bolster India’s standing in ‘Ease of doing Business’, attract foreign investments and emerge as a viable alternative to become a manufacturing hub.

COVID-19 has not Affected the EV Push in India
The lockdown period to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in India saw pollution levels dropping to the lowest levels since 2018. No economic activity from March 15-April 30 led to a reduction of 15 per cent in Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels compared to 2019. As the Ministry of Home Affairs allowed the economy to open up on a stage-by-stage basis, the state governments in India and the Centre have formulated new policies to push for Electric Vehicles at a larger scale, helping India reach its target as set in the Paris Climate Accords.
Expectations from India in the UN Security Council
India starts her eighth two-year elected term in the UN Security Council from 1 January 2021. Three priorities have been identified by India when campaigning for elections to the Security Council. These are the countering of terrorism by enforcing Security Council resolutions; the efficient use of UN peacekeeping missions; and enabling the use of technology with a human touch. India has proposed to pursue these priorities while calling for “reformed multilateralism”, which in essence means enabling all members of the Security Council to participate on an equal basis in taking decisions.
New Geopolitics: India’s Foreign Policy Challenges in 2021
Covid-19 has accelerated the global political and economic rebalancing that had been underway for the last two decades. New power equations are emerging. China’s confidence has increased many folds while the West is struggling to find answers to its external and domestic problems. The West’s unity, a constant fixture of international relations since 1945 has been fractured. The transatlantic alliance is a pale shadow of its former self. Trump’s America First policy has challenged the assumptions underlying the US alliance system.
US-Taiwan Relations under Joe Biden Administration
Amongst many of the sensitive issues that Joe Biden will inherit, the US-Taiwan relations is going to be of critical importance for the US, Indo-Pacific strategy. Tsai Ing-wen has already congratulated Joe Biden on Twitter, she wrote: “The values on which we have built our relationship could be stronger. I look forward to working together to further our friendship and contributions to international society.” Joe Biden’s transition team is already working with the Tsai Ing-wen administration.
