INS Arihant’s Deterrence Patrol: A Critical Milestone in India’s Nuclear Posture
On November 05, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the successful completion of deterrence patrol by country’s first indigenously designed and built nuclear power submarine, INS Arihant.1 This marks an important leap in country’s strategic posture as it completes the operationalisation of the nuclear triad, and brings the country closer to achieving a credible nuclear deterrence against the adversaries.

The Programme INS Arihant Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear (SSBN), which completed its ‘deterrence patrol’ recently and was commended by the Prime Minister, is a three decades old pursuit of a survivable, nuclear launch option. It owes its genesis in events of 1971 War that proved the efficacy of submarines as great deterrent to adversaries far exceeding one’s own defence capability.

Monday, 5 November 2018, was indeed a red letter and historic day in the history of India’s security paradigm when a visibly proud Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the completion of a maiden ‘deterrent patrol’ by INS Arihant, India’s first indigenously built nuclear ballistic missile submarine.

INS Arihant will enable India to assert its rights on water, besides land and air. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on November 5 that India’s first indigenously designed and built nuclear-powered submarine, the INS Arihant, which is equipped with nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles had just completed a nearly month-long nuclear deterrence patrol. This is a landmark development on many counts.
