Managing the LAC: Rules are Handrails, and Not Handcuffs!
The Dragon is awake, and is vigourously seeking to establish Pax Sinica! Of the two milestones of the 100th anniversaries of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 2021 and 2049 respectively, the first will be a big event in the tenure of the current President Xi Jinping.
US’ Priority: Pacific, within the Indo-Pacific
The ongoing operational maneuvers by the US military in the Pacific Ocean, establishment of the Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI) in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, and a new approach towards Taipei through the Taiwan Defence Act are indicative of the primacy of the Pacific Ocean in the broader US Indo-Pacific Strategy.
How Sport Mirrors the India- Pakistan Relationship
Sport is complex. As well as being skill, it is also diplomacy. Skills matter, but it is “grievance sport,” when players seek to avenge history, that counts. For example, India and Pakistan are unable to delink personal pieties from inter- state relations.1 In cricket and hockey, the rivalry is blood sport. The China-Japan Bilateral Relationship has had an enduring impact on international relations. In this regard, the coexistence of political hostilities and an extensive economic engagement confound the reading on the China-Japan relationship.
Refugees, not Settlements, are the Bigger Impediment to Israeli-Palestinian Peace
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent comments that his new government, with support from the Trump Administration in the US will annex parts of the West Bank have, as expected, caused quite a flutter in the international community. Many have condemned the move, while members of the European Union, one of Israel’s most important trading partners, have warned against any such unilateral move. Within Israel, Netanyahu’s plans enjoy greater support from the public, but here too civil society and the national security community have expressed their reservations.
A Budgetary Farce in Pakistan
The expectation from the second full-year budget presented by the Imran Khan government was out-of-the-box thinking to tackle immediate and long term issues. These included the COVID-19 pandemic, economic slowdown and mounting debt on the one hand and tackling issues of the looming water scarcity, the health infrastructure and the education emergency, on the other. Instead, the exercise seems to have taken budget-making in Pakistan to new heights of fantasy.
