India and Russia – Two decades of Strategic Dialogue and Partnership
In the middle of 1999, Vladimir Putin, the then Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) was appointed the Prime Minister by the ailing and drinking Boris Yeltsin- maverick of the Russian history. Within six months, before the year ended, Putin took the reins as the President of the uncertain Russian Federation. Russians put a great faith in him to bring back their lost pride and prosperity.
Kashmir Urgently Needs a Fresh Intellectual Discourse
As the situation in Kashmir slowly but steadily seems to ease off, the baffling question in most quarters is that how should the Government move forward in restoring the confidence of large sections of people in the Valley. This question does not apply to the pro-Pakistan constituency, which has a stated position on the issue. It is about the large silent majority who seem to be confused given the enormity of the August 5 decision to abrogate the special status of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir.
Myanmar Round Up: August 2019
8888 Uprising Celebrations The month of August holds reverence in the Myanmar political calendar due to the 8888 Pro-Democracy Uprising, named so since the uprising for democracy peaked on 8 Aug 1988 at Yangon University. West Asia Monthly Round-Up: August 2019
West Asia continues to be fraught with uncertainty and mixed diplomatic discourse. On the one hand US-Iran spat continues but showed the signs of fissure in the so called “Alliance of the Willing” as UK released the detained Iranian Tanker Grace I (renamed Adrian Darya I) despite US protests and efforts to stop the ship that was supposedly destined for Syrian ports.
Japan Promotes Indo-Pacific in African Strategic Thinking
In his opening address at the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Prime Minister Abe sought support from the African nations to join hands with Japan and work together to “safeguard the Indo-Pacific, which connects Africa and Japan, with great care as an ‘international public good’ permeated by the rule of law”.1 He was also successful in including Indo-Pacific in the Yokohama Declaration issued at the end of the summit level conference focusing on ‘grant aids and technical assistance’ under the Japan-Africa cooperation mechanism started in 1993.
