The California Senate approved Senate Bill No. 403, which would amend many existing laws on discrimination in California to add the protected characteristic of caste. The bill illustrates the travel of caste to the United States from India. This brings up several questions in our minds. Is there evidence for caste discrimination in the United States? How will the bill impact the understanding of caste, the lives of Indians living abroad, and finally, India, its tech industry, economy etc?
