The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy conducted the successful maiden test trial of ‘ADC-150’ from IL 38SD aircraft off the coast of Goa on 27 April 2023. ‘ADC-150’ is an indigenously designed and developed Air Droppable Container with 150 kg payload capacity. The trial was conducted to enhance the naval operational logistics capabilities by providing quick response to meet the requirement of critical engineering stores to ships (under distress), which are deployed more than 2,000 kms from the coast. Centre of Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES), a Delhi-based laboratory of DRDO has designed and developed a Vertical Shaft based Underground Ammunition Storage Facility. It enables upward vertical dissipation of blast effects considerably reducing the blast effect on surrounding utilities. The Design Validation Trial of this Underground Ammunition Storage Structure was successfully conducted on 30 April 2023. The instrumented blast trial was carried out in presence of the Armed Forces by detonating 5,000 kgs of TNT in one of the chambers of the underground facility. This industry friendly initiative would make the defence products cost competitive in global market. To promote ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in defence and minimise imports by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved 4th Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important Line Replacement Units (LRUs)/Sub-systems/Spares & Components, including high-end materials & spares, with import substitution value worth Rs 715 crore. These will only be procured from the Indian Industry after the timelines indicated in the list. Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), the flagship initiative of MoD, has reached a milestone with the signing of its 250th contract - first under Mission DefSpace - and 100th SPRINT (Navy) contract in New Delhi on 15 May 2023. Till date, iDEX has received more than 7,500 applications from individual innovators, MSMEs and start-ups under various categories of challenges like DISC, Prime and Open Challenge. iDEX has also been able to generate thousands of jobs and attract India’s talent back to the country. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has exhorted research institutes to speed up activities in advanced technology and achieve progress to make India fully capable of dealing with emerging threats related to cyber and space. In a breakthrough in developing 2000kN semi-cryogenic thrust engine for heavier satellites of the GSAT series, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) carried out its first integrated testing at the newly commissioned semi-cryogenic facility of ISRO's Propulsion Complex (IPRC) in Tamil Nadu's Mahendragiri. The Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) of ISRO has undertaken the design and development of a Semicryogenic engine with 2000 kN thrust with Indian industry participation, and will power the booster stages of future launch vehicles and works on Liquid Oxygen (LOX)-Kerosene propellant combination. Taking a leap forward in the space research sector of India, the ISRO is all set to launch two back-to-back missions in a few months – Chandrayaan 3 and Aditya L1, both set to be launched in July 2023. Chandrayaan 3 is the third moon mission set to be launched by ISRO, where a spacecraft will be launched into the lunar orbit of the moon for space research. Further, Aditya L1 is set to be India’s first-ever space mission to the sun. NITI Aayog has pitched for establishing attractive financing frameworks such as blending finances and green bonds to attract private sector investment in setting up small modular reactors (SMR) to decarbonise India's energy sector. The Aayog in a report titled 'The Role of Small Modular Reactors in Energy Transition' further suggested that availability of low-cost finance, green finance and incorporation of nuclear into green taxonomy can improve the economics of SMR projects. As per the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the SMRs are advanced nuclear reactors with a power generation capacity ranging from less than 30 MWe to 300+ MWe. On 12 May 2023, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar launched the 3rd Semicon India Future Design roadshow at IIT Delhi, with an aim to encourage innovation, facilitate investment and catalyse the Startups ecosystem in the semiconductor design and manufacturing space. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said, “The primary objective of this initiative is to attract investments from across the world and help build a vibrant semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem. This year’s theme was ‘School to Startup - igniting young minds to innovate’. On 2 May 2023, the Government of India said that there is a need to amend the IPR policy to take care of changing opportunities. Addressing the Global Science, Research and Innovation Summit organized by CII titled “Fostering Science, Research and Innovation Partnerships’ under the aegis of the India’s G20 Presidency at IIT Delhi, Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Adviser at the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India said, while India grants average of 23,000 patents per annum, despite having over 1000 Universities, it is over 5 lakhs in China. The Rare Earth (RE) resources in India are reported to be the fifth largest in the world. Indian resource is significantly lean w.r.t. grade and it is tied with radioactivity making the extraction long, complex and expensive. Further, Indian resource contain Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) while Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE) are not available in extractable quantities. In case of rare earths, a long drawn eco-system in value chain is required to move from reserves to finished product comprising of large number of processes/plants. In a momentous milestone in S&T cooperation between India and Israel, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Industrial Research and Development Cooperation was signed between the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) of the Republic of India and the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), under the Ministry of Defense of the State of Israel. China's leading smart-phone maker Oppo says that it will shut down its semiconductor division and cease development of its own chips, citing a gloomy smartphone market and uncertainties in the global economy. Oppo, the world's No. 4 handset maker by shipments, confirmed that it will "cease the operation" of ZEKU, the company's flagship chip development unit and drop the development of its own chips. US Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines said during a Congressional Hearing that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan could halt production by the world’s largest advanced chipmaker, wiping out up to US$1 trillion per year from the global economy in the first few years.Avril Haines called a “general estimate” during testimony before the US Senate Armed Services Committee. She said that the advanced semiconductors produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) are used in 90 percent of “almost every category of electronic device around the world”. On 4 May 2023, the Biden administration announced that it will invest $140 million into research and development of artificial intelligence (AI) amid the current boom of the new technology. Along with the funding, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will issue policy guidance on the use of AI by the federal government in the coming months, and companies that develop AI, such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, have made commitments to participate in a public evaluation of AI systems. The National Science Foundation will invest the $140 million to launch seven new National AI Research Institutes, bringing the total number of such institutes in the U.S. to 25. According to the latest forecast from Gartner, global semiconductor revenue isprojected to decline 11.2 per cent in 2023.According to the forecast, in 2022, the market totalled USD 599.6billion, which was marginal growth of 0.2 per cent from 2021.
