Replied by VIF : The present government has often has reiterated that technology is a strong priority area for the government making it is a key element of economic growth. India ranks third among the most attractive investment destinations for technology transactions in the world. A quick reference to the latest Global Technology Innovation Report by KPMG where India is ranked third as leaders in the innovations following USA and China would be instrumental to understand our position globally.
According to the report, what has worked in India’s favour is that “India has prioritised government support for entrepreneurship and a burgeoning culture of innovation. Many start-up business models are leveraging emerging technologies to cater to India’s mobile-first generation”. It points to the talent and infrastructure in our country, making India one among the topmost countries in the world in the field of scientific research.
There are so many technological achievements that every Indian should feel proud about, which includes ISRO developing an atomic clock that will be used in navigation satellites to measure precise location data. The space agency currently imports atomic clocks from European aerospace manufacturer Astrium. ISRO demonstrated its capability of handling complex missions by successfully launching a record 104 satellites on a single rocket and many other such achievements. From developing India’s first ever indigenous supercomputer , developed an indigenous seeker for Brahmos India has made some significant strides in the world of science and technology.
But given the security challenges India faces it has indeed bought some amount of technology India buys specially in its defence sector. Their needs are urgent, thus often importing technology become critical need of the hour, rather than wait for the indigenous systems to materialize. It needs to be mentioned that India’s defence modernisation and its research and development in this sector is receiving greater attention than ever before.
