India-Maldives Policy Brief

The Maldives has attracted international attention due to the increased importance of the Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific region. India-Maldives relations have made immense progress in the past years. The relations have seen significant positive developments, such as signing of the agreement for the Great Male Connectivity Project (GMCP). However, the relations face two major challenges - the presence of Islamic radicalisation and China’s increasing economic clout in the country. The brief also discusses Maldives relationship with the United States (US), China, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Talk on "India and Maldives Bilateral Relations"

On 06 September 2021, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) organised a talk on “India-Maldives-bilateral Relations”. India-Maldives relations had made progress in the last couple of years. These relations are backed by positive activity, for example, the Great Male Connectivity Project (GMCP). The discussion overall highlighted a few of the security challenges in the Maldives, such as the presence of Islamic radicalisation, China’s inroads in the country and others. The discussion was held under the Chatham House Rules.

Vivekananda International Foundation’s (VIF) Interaction with Maldives Delegation

On 29th of January 2019, the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) hosted an interaction with a delegation from the Maldives. The Maldives’ delegation was led by Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, former Vice President of the Maldives. Other members of the delegation included Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, former Vice President, Govt. of the Maldives, Shidhatha Shareef, Minister for Gender, Family and Services, Govt. of the Maldives, Adam Shareef, former Minister of Defence and National Security, Govt.
