Impressions from a Young Professionals’ Workshop on Future Direction of Indo-Bangladesh Relationship
The conclusion of Indian Prime Minister’s two day visit to Dhaka has offered an opportunity to scholars, analysts and academicians to debate and discuss about future direction of India-Bangladesh relationship. Success and failure of the visit is measured in terms of whether this has further widened and deepened bilateral ties after Mrs. Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Delhi in January 2010. The excitement and apprehensions were discussed at a forum where young Indian and Bangladesh professionals gathered for almost 10 days.
Revitalising India’s ‘Look East’ Policy
It has been two decades since India launched its much-vaunted ‘Look East’ policy. The recent conclusion of free trade agreements with Malaysia and Japan, which follows in the footsteps of similar agreements with Singapore and South Korea, has reaffirmed New Delhi’s ability to move beyond the realm of an aspiring East Asian player by strengthening substantive linkages with the region that have traditionally been embedded in the rhetoric of shared cultural, religious and historical bonds.
The Emerging Situation in Afghanistan and Indo-Afghan Relations
The Indo-Afghan relations cannot but be seen in the context of the evolving situation in Afghanistan. Many regional and extra regional players have been involved in the Afghan imbroglio for over a decade and some for even over three decades. Intervention by the US and western forces in Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11 attacks was supposed to get rid of Taliban and Al Qaeda but it cannot be said that the western forces have been entirely successful in their mission.
India’s Options in Afghanistan
Geo-Political perceptions of Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan Before one can dwell on India’s options in Afghanistan, it may be better to examine the Pakistan’s role in this country. The geo- political perceptions of Pakistan in Afghanistan should be examined in the light of Pakistan’s persistent effort for establishing a pliable and subservient regime in Afghanistan. It seems Pakistan has been advocating the necessity of strategic depth in Afghanistan to mask its territorial ambitious and its aim of expanding its strategic frontiers towards west and Central Asian regions.
Cables Wake-Up Call for Politicos
Should Wikileaks be taken seriously? Has our media giving them more attention than they deserve? These are the questions that have been asked. The first round of Wikileaks created a sensation as, for the first time ever, classified diplomatic communications of the world’s foremost power were being exposed involuntarily.
The Role of The Governor
The Governor of Gujarat has appointed a retired High Court Judge as the Lokayukt of the State without consulting the Chief Minister and after consulting the Leader of the Opposition.
Flawed Communal Bill, 2011
Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) Bill, 2011 is an affront to the Indian civilization and tradition which since thousands of years believed in peaceful co- existence and respected the pluralistic values of life. The Hindu civilization demonstrated a spirit of harmony rather than conflict; of synthesis and tolerance rather than opposition. This ideal of harmony and tolerance of the Hindus has been carried on for thousands of years and even now the Hindus maintain impeccable faith in it.
